Police and security companies work to curb drugs in school

The law enforcement officials investigated a college in Alberton as part of their routine searches at schools.

IN an attempt to stamp out the use of drugs and the carrying of dangerous weapons in educational institutions, a routine search was carried out at a college in Alberton.

This was a combined effort between the Department of Education with the Brackendowns SAPS, EMPD Department of Community Safety and private security companies Fidelity ADT, Fox Security and D&D Tactical.

This is part of the routine searches done at schools in Alberton area, according to Brackendowns SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lindile Moloi.

The team found dagga at the college and further proactive patrols and stop-and-search of vehicles in the area resulted in the apprehension and arrest of two suspects, one in possession of dagga and a second for driving an unroadworthy vehicle with no licence.

Linda Goodenough, the community development manager for Fidelity ADT, said with all the pro-medical marijuana publicity over the last couple of months, parents need to remember that marijuana can be damaging and addictive and cause harmful effects to their children.

“There are serious and harmful effects associated with abusing marijuana and we need to teach our children to say no.”

According to Goodenough the results of a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), focusing on High School Youth Risk Behaviour Survey Data, highlighted harmful and long-lasting effects of cannabis on a teen’s health and well-being.

“As parents I feel we have a responsibility to educate our children about the dangers and risks associated with taking drugs. They need to be empowered to make informed decisions. If you suspect your child may be taking drugs don’t hesitate to call one of the local drug centres for advice or guidance,” said Goodenough.
