Raiders make mince meat of Alberton

The Eland team put on a show despite coming short 65-20 to the home team.

A SQUARE Forklift Alberton Rugby Club took on the Raiders on June 1 on the Raiders’ home ground.

The Alberton team started the fixture with all the signs of a championship team by scoring right at the onset of the game.

Andile Mhlanga dotted the ball down under the posts.

A few minutes later Donovan Putter converted a penalty to put the visitors at 8-0 after 15 minutes.

Raiders responded on the 20-minute mark with their own try and the scoring opened up from there. By the time the teams retired to the shed for half-time, the scoreline was at 35-8 to the Raiders.

The second half started in the same fashion with Alberton scoring courtesy of Alberton speedster Thorn Khumalo and managed to keep the home team at bay with 35-15 for the next quarter.

Another highlight is that of Lindo Dladla’s try, as Sasha Jacobs threw a miracle ball to the big front row player who put down the hand brake and ran in for Alberton’s third and final try.

The final score was 65-20 for the Raiders.

There has been great improvement for the Eland team in the previous weeks as they have been reintroduced in the Pirates grand challenge and are competing with the top clubs in the country at times.

Alberton enjoy a bye this week and take on Pukke on June 13 in Alberton.
