I am a 64-year-old pensioner, who has been looking for work in the Alberton area or surrounds.
It would appear that if you are my age and older there is no hope for you. I am fit and healthy and able to work any hours and any days, but am not seen to be of any use.
I was an admin manager before retiring. My husband made some very foolish decisions, and now when we are desperate, and it is necessary for me to work again there is nothing for me.
I find it impossible to live on my little pension, which decreases every year. I am also not entitled to a government pension. My husband is also not entitled to a government pension. I did save, but at the time that my children were growing up, there was no free education, and all school fees and varsity fees were paid by my husband and me.
My children have emigrated, and try as much as possible to assist us, but they have their own lives and families to take care of.
I have occasionally seen adverts in the paper for jobs, but by the time you get there, the queue is a mile long. PNA, for instance, was advertising the other day, and that was the case.
I really think we should have an employment agency which caters for pensioners. We still have so much to give, and although we may not have fancy degrees, we can walk, talk, drive, make telephone calls, and work hard because we desperately need to look after our jobs. We also don’t have the problem younger people have of worrying about children.
I would be more than willing to work from home, and if there is something I am not familiar with, I have no doubt that I could be taught quickly enough.
I’m not asking for handouts, but work.
