SECURITY officer Stephen Gafane (44) was shot and wounded while attending to a panic alarm in Bendon Street, Brackendowns.
At about 9.20pm on November 27, Gafane, a 4th Dimension reaction officer, was racing to attend a panic alarm and as he neared the address he observed a black BMW X5 exiting from the property with, what turned out to be suspects, in it.
The vehicle raced towards him and before he could turn his vehicle around to give chase the vehicle passed him and two shots were fired.
The first bullet missed the vehicle but the second went through the door and entered Gafane’s leg just above the knee. It shattered his leg and he will have to undergo extensive surgery in the next few weeks.
He is in a stable condition in the Netcare Union Hospital.
It turns out the resident of the house went outside to smoke when he was overpowered and assaulted by the suspects who were hiding in a bush. The panic button was activated by his wife when she heard the commotion.
The suspects forced the resident into the house and got a laptop and the family’s vehicle keys and fled the scene.
Gafane has been described by his fellow officers as a dedicated officer who is admired by his fellow officers and clients alike.
Spokesperson Donovan du Toit said the whole of 4th Dimension wish him a speedy recovery and they will support him throughout the process. He promised no stone will be left unturned in trying to bring these perpetrators to book. The community has been requested to spare a thought for all reaction officers who keep residents safe. They risk their lives every time they attend to an alarm.
SAPS are currently busy with their investigations.
It has come to the RECORD’s attention that residents are also going to do something to assist Gafane, so watch this space for updated news on this as well as his condition.
