Old wheelie bins auctioned at the Alberton Solid Waste depot

Between August 14 and 15 there were an estimated 60 000 wheelie bins that were auctioned

AN auction was held at the Alberton Solid Waste depot off Swartkoppies Road on August 14. The auction was for the used wheelie bins that were no longer able to be used.

According to the auctioneers, Spokes Auctioneers, there were too many wheelie bins at various depot sites. An estimated amount of 60 000 wheelie bins were auctioned off at four sites – Alberton, Springs, Bedfordview and Edenvale.

The Alberton auction saw seven lots being sold. Each lot had upwards of 300 individual bins with many lots being much bigger.

Most of the lots on the day were bought by Mpact who intend to recycle the plastic and use it for new containers.
