It was with much sadness I learnt Rob Winter, a member of Johannesburg South Garden Club for many years, passed away last week. Rob was one of the keenest gardeners I knew, and he was always willing to happily share his knowledge. I bought quite a few plants from him and they have all flourished beautifully. When I look at them now, I’ll do so fondly and remember Rob. Sincere condolences to his wife Wendy and family.
Warmer days
Haven’t we been having some beautiful warm days? Such super weather for July, long may it reign.
And on that note I’ll be spending a few hours in the garden this coming weekend, time to tidy, cut back and prune the roses. August is here, and it’s known as the windy month, so let’s see.
Gardening tips for roses
Prune and cut away diseased and damaged wood, except in very cold areas where you can leave it another week or two. Aerate the soil after pruning, dig in compost, superphosphate and fertiliser. Water well after fertilising. If powdery mildew is persistent dog agricultural lime into the soil.

Bouquets of the Week
Pat Kostner would like thank three wonderful people for their honesty and the trouble they went to after she left her money bag in Aroma Di Café in Glenvista Shopping Centre. “To Sharon, one of the waitresses at Aroma Di Café and the owner Pano. Sharon found it when I’d left the shop and Pano put it away safely in his safe over the weekend. In the bag was my Sassa cards and new ID card as well as some cash. On the Monday Sharon went to see the manager of Glenvista Post office, Jacques, to see if he could trace me. Eventually he managed to find my home address and I got my possessions back. Jacques, Sharon and Pano, thank you very much. You’ve restored my faith in the human race!”
That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
