Well, for all the soccer fans the Fifa World Cup kicked off last week, so I’m sure this will be quite a highlight for many of you. I’ll even be watching some of the matches, especially England’s and Portugal’s games. Although I’m not a huge soccer fan, there’s something about international games!

Winter treat

With winter really and truly here why not spoil yourself with a bottle of De Krans Original Espresso.

What could be better than combining two of the things we love most – wine and coffee (in no particular order, of course)? Not much … which is why we’re mad about De Krans Original Espresso – port and coffee all in one bottle.

Although there are no actual coffee beans used, the coffee taste is right up there … the result of maturing the wine in heavy toasted oak. This dessert wine has a smooth palate with flavours of dried fruit, prunes and cacao. It’s not overly sweet and stays on trend with the drier style that is synonymous with the De Krans port-style wines. In summer, we drank it chilled, now the winter chills set it, serve it with a crème brûlée, or other sweet desserts. Or why not try it as an Espresso Martini … really lovely end to a meal.

Simply mix three parts De Krans Original Espresso, one part cold espresso and one part vodka in a cocktail shaker, give it a good shake and then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with coffee beans and enjoy!

The De Krans Original Espresso comes in a cute and convenient 375ml bottle, and sells for around R79 per bottle. Details: www.dekrans.co.za

Snuggle up with a good book

What better way to while away an afternoon than on a comfy couch reading.

As a teenager, Amber struggles with her self-image but finds solace and understanding in Tyler, a neighbourhood boy. As they navigate adolescence they become best friends. In Amy Hatvany’s It Happens All the Time, over the years they grow apart, but when Amber returns home after her college graduation they pick up where they left off. But this time a flirtation begins to blossom and despite the fact that Amber is engaged to her college sweetheart, Tyler lets himself believe their friendship could turn into something more. Then one night, fuelled by alcohol, Tyler kisses Amber and what happens next changes their lives forever in the most brutal possible way. This is not an easy read, but in a country rife with attacks on women, it’s bang on target. Washington Square Press, R230.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
