Children to ride for Stepping Stone Hospice

The Kiddies Ride offers a wonderful adventure with closed off routes where children with different skill levels get to experience an exciting day out where winning is not the main focus, as everyone is a winner.

WHILE the adults are still hibernating and contemplating whether they should or should not take up the challenge of the annual 947 Telkom Cycle Challenge, children are stepping up and committing to ride for a purpose.

Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services has been participating in this cycle event since 2014, having raised thousands of rands through the efforts of their cycling team. This year, as a first, they now boast with three entries into the Telkom 947 Kiddies Ride, scheduled to take place on November 10 at the Riversands Commercial Park.

Craig van Eeden (8) from Meyersdal and siblings Liam (6) and Isla du Toit (8) from Kempton Park, are the proud, first Stepping Stone Hospice entrees in the ride, with the distances varying between 1km and 5km and the age groups two to 10 years.

The Kiddies Ride offers a wonderful adventure with closed off routes where children with different skill levels get to experience an exciting day out where winning is not the main focus, as everyone is a winner. All finishers receive a T-shirt, medal and goodie bag to celebrate their participation, and are able to enjoy some time together off their bicycles at the Spur Fun Zone.

The main race, now in its 22nd year, takes place on the November 18 where “the sting has been taken out of the tail”. Organisers have decided to reverse the route to make the ride fresh, exciting and more enjoyable.

“We want to thank the 30 cyclists, including our kiddies, who have already chosen Stepping Stone Hospice as their charity for this year’s event. We appreciate your support and truly see it as a vote of confidence in the work we do,” said Judy Joubert, team leader of the Stepping Stone Hospice cycling team.

DOING IT AGAIN: Craig van Eeden (8) from Meyersdal will compete in the 5km ride and considers himself somewhat of an “experienced” rider, as he completed the 3km ride last year in less than five minutes. “I’m so happy that I can ride for hospice, now it feels that I’m really going to do it for a good reason,” he said.

“As for those who are still considering Riding for a Purpose, we would love nothing more than to welcome you to our team. We are working hard to reach our goal of 100 riders in the Stepping Stone Hospice charity team. Just a gentle reminder when you register online (www.cyclechallenge.co.za) to add Stepping Stone Hospice as a Charity Bond. Once done, to also send your details to Judy Joubert at judy.joubert@absa.co.za,” Judy explained.

The hospice cyclists in the main race and mountain bike race are required to raise a minimum amount of R1 500 for Stepping Stone Hospice, payable by mid-November. The children are asked to raise a minimum of R300 each.
