Allies the pride of Alberton

Hoërskool Alberton's rugby teams had a super round this year.

HOËRSKOOL Alberton has proved themselves to be the premier school with regards to the Golden Lions league in Alberton and have again reached the finals in many age groups.

They have had a super year all round with three of the teams, the first, second, and u-16’s winning the titles in the NWU Super 16 and the u-14 team reaching the final too.

The u-14 side has really bounced back well from the defeat that they suffered at the hands of Florida in that final. They have scored 164 points and only conceded 29 in their four league game. They are in the semi-final of the Golden Lions League at Randburg on Saturday, 9 June. If they win they have a game against Dinamika in the finals the following week.

The u-15 side has had a tough year but has come back nicely and shown great character to make the playoffs in their section and now have a chance of at least qualifying for the Beeld.

A star team

Probably the star team is the u-16 team who have had an unbelievable run from u-14 level where they have done almost the impossible by winning all three Super 16 titles and both Golden Lions final that they have played.

Last year in the Beeld they, unfortunately, came up against the Macro school Transvalia. They will be hoping for an easier draw this year. But having said that, I believe this team has the potential win go even further in the Beeld. I just look back at the Super 16 final against Florida, also a Macro school, and the character they showed as well as calmness under pressure.

Super title

Then there is the first team. They too have won the Super 16 title this year against Florida in what was a super game of rugby. They did, unfortunately, suffer their first loss of the season at the hands of Randburg. They never the less still won the league but will have to be careful about complacency going into the final.

The team have shown a different character this year by being able to come back from behind, (twice against Florida) but they will have to play for the full game plus at full concentration to win. Linden also has a chance of meeting Allies in the final. An opportunity they will be relishing following their loss to Allies in the league matches.

They have played in the last couple of finals although last year was beaten by a stunning performance by Dinamika. I think Allies can beat Linden on looking at Lindens game with Dinamika. Namies should have won that game. But a final is a whole new ball game and anything can happen. Last year Dinamika were certainly not favourites going into the game.

The other teams also did superbly with the third teams, as well as the u-14B and u-15B teams, being league winners. The second team were crowned Super 16 Champions when they beat Florida in the final.

STARS: The u-16 team is probably the star team who have had an unbelievable run from u-14 level where they have done almost the impossible by winning all three Super 16 titles and both Golden Lions final that they have played.

I think that there is every opportunity for at least two trophies staying in Alberton. Only time will tell but let’s go and support the teams. The u-14 title might be won by Namies so there will be plenty local teams in action.

Go Allies and Namies and bring those titles back to Alberton!
