Union win against JHB Police

Union Rugby Club hosted Johannesburg Police in a league match.

BULLDOGS Union Rugby Club hosted Johannesburg Police on May 5 at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre.

This was Union’s second match in the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge Competition, the first being their impressive victory against A Square Forklift Alberton.

The Bobbies are known to be a very physical side so the expectation was always that this was going to be a tough day at the office for the home side.

The hosts certainly started the game where they had left off in Alberton and were on the scoreboard in the first couple of minutes when openside flanker Waldo Jansen van Vuuren crashed over after a great run by the forwards. The conversion made the early lead 7-0.

JHB Police, however, started to apply pressure of their own after the restart and were on the scoreboard with a drop goal to reduce the deficit to 7-3.

Union carried on attacking, especially their backline which have looked impressive the whole year. They were rewarded when the speedy right wing Johan Venter rounded off a good backline move and scored his try to stretch the lead to 12-3.

JHB Police, however, wasn’t going to give up. Their right wing, JC de Jager, eventually broke the stalemate after going around the defence and flyhalf Deon Hendriks was successful with the conversion to reduce the deficit. Hendriks converted a penalty to take JHB Police into the lead.

Union regained their lead by a try, but the JHB Police scrumhalf, Ryno Hendriks, scored to get his team in front again 18-17 with about 20 minutes left on the clock.

The inside centre of Union, Anton Coetzee, scored as well as full back Quinton Norris, with fly half Kenneth du Plessis adding his conversion, taking the final tally to 31-25 in favour of the home side.
