How you can be a green hero

Here are a few small ways to make a big difference to the environment.

IT’S becoming more pronounced every day that the environment must be protected and sustained for future generations. Some businesses and governments have already started making positive impacts towards the protection of the earth, but what can we as individuals actually do about it? How can we be green heroes?

It is the duty of all of us to make either big and small impacts through good daily habits. Here are a few small ways to make a big difference.

Join the recycling movement

This is the easiest and most common way to help. All you have to do is make it a new, daily habit. Before you know it, you’ll be recycling with your eyes closed!

Check your labels

Look at the packaging of whatever you are buying to see if it’s from responsible sources. Look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo, then you’ll know that the product has been made from easily biodegradable materials or originate from forests that are managed sustainably, protecting trees for the future.

Turn off lights and close your taps

By turning off lights when they are not being used, power stations don’t have to work so hard and will emit less pollution into the air. Water is also a very scarce resource that should always be saved!

Re-use plastics

Since plastics take several lifetimes to decompose naturally, it’s best for the environment if everyone re-uses them to stop more plastic products from being produced and littered. Re-use your plastic bags or use fabric bags to store your groceries in, for example.

Plant something

Not only is it good for the environment if you plant a tree, adopt a few pot plants or start your own herb garden, it’s also good for you. It’s like raising a leafy child and it provides you with food and fresh air.

Donate towards the cause

Organisations such as WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and Greenpeace International are doing incredible work to save the environment. Show your support by visiting their websites and becoming involved or donating to them as often as you can.

Walk, use a bicycle, or carpool together

Instead of taking your car wherever you go, save petrol by walking when possible, carpooling in groups or using a bicycle to minimise your carbon footprint. In the long run, it’s sure to save you lots of money, too.
