Please help with medical bills

Her condition has dramatically worsened and, in the meantime, she also lost her job.

ALBERTONIAN Guida Reis is on a mission to raise funds for Lena Machado whose life has taken a turn for the worst after she was diagnosed with stage four metastatic brain tumours. She is pleading for the community’s help.

“Just six short months ago, Lena was a vibrant, independent working woman without a care in the world,” said Guida. “Lena was living on her own and just finished rebuilding her life after a stressful divorce.

“After she suffered two seizures last November, she lost a lot of mobility in her right leg, as well as feeling in her fingers and right hand. She went for a private CT scan when she received the bad news.

“Sadly, Lena was diagnosed with four metastatic brain tumours. It was the pressure from these tumours that caused her to have seizures, lose mobility and the ability to talk properly.

“As Lena has no medical aid, she is left in the hands of a government hospital. Her condition has dramatically worsened and, in the meantime, she also lost her job. Her daughter, Nicole, has given up her own job to look after her mother in the hospital.

“The burden is extreme and impossible for them. Lena needs a private hospital, at a cost of R3.5-million, to diagnose, operate, and cover chemotherapy. An additional R5 000 is needed for additional treatment.

BEFORE THE PAIN: This was a healthy, happy and free Lena Machado before her condition took a tragic turn.

“If she is released from the hospital, she will require a private nurse for 24 hours a day, which costs just over R50 000 per month (excluding the nurse’s meals, travel costs and all medication and equipment that Lena needs). Further funds will have to be raised for physio- and speech therapy, oxygen, and, if necessary, palliative care.

“Essentially, around R3.5-m needs to be raised to ensure Lena gets access to the best surgeons and oncologists in the private medical field.

“Please donate to save Lena’s life. The family thanks you in advance for any contribution,” concluded Guida.
