Marais Viljoen dominates at district athletics

Marais Viljoen won the award for Best Performing School at the annual District Athletics Awards.

Marais Viljoen won the award for Best Performing School at the annual District Athletics Awards.

Marais Viljoen received the award based on their dominating performance during the Alberton schools athletic season. This culminated in more than 50 athletes taking part in the D6 championship and having the most athletes qualifying for the Gauteng Championship of any school in Alberton or the surroundings.

From the athletes taking part at the district championship, 31 qualified to take part in 41 items at the Gauteng Championship.

Not only was Marais Viljoen chosen as the Best Performing School but three of their athletes received trophies for their individual achievements. Carla Hattingh received the award for Best Track Senior, Danielle Leonard for Best Field Senior and Rianiel Turner for Best Field Junior.

Martie Heystek, the principal and Ryno Luus, the sports director, concur that hard work, dedication by athletes, coaches, parents, supporters as well as a system that supports the talent of the young athletes make the difference and brings rewards on the highest level of competition.
