MAAIKE VAN DEN BERG: “I guess they can’t be stopped, but they should at least have consideration for the people around them and not make loud music all day and every day. Think of others first.”
THE RECORD explored the town to ask community members what their opinions were about illegal churches. Here is what they had to say.
BONGANE SOKHELA: “Illegal churches must be shut down. They exploit poor people. They just want to make money and they don’t do it to spread the Word of God. The government must intervene.”CHRISTINE BRITZ: “I do not agree with illegal churches. They have no right to just establish themselves wherever they want to. Like the saying goes: ‘Give them a hand and they grab the whole arm’.”JOYCE MASEKO: “These churches attract hordes of people, which is not good for surrounding residents. Illegal churches must be banished from communities, because they exploit the poor and don’t care about God’s Word.”EDWARD NDLOVU: “Illegal churches are not good. People just create churches wherever they feel like. They use the facilities without paying a cent. That is really unfair towards the rest of the community.”
