The Bag Lady

When it comes to gifts, people say it’s the thought that counts. I recently came across a gorgeous local online personalised gift store, WhoopNella.

Valentine’s Day has come and gone and I guess now we’ll soon be seeing bunnies hopping into the shops for Easter. Do you feel like me? The weeks are going by far too fast!

How do you refuse?

While I was chatting with a friend the other day, she said that her children’s crèche was having a picnic for all the children for Valentine’s Day. It sounded lovely, but what pressure for parents, especially those who are a bit strapped for cash. Not only did the children have to take baskets full of little goodies to eat but were also asked to come dressed in red. This is perfect if your child already owns red-coloured clothing but it is an extra expense if they don’t. I remember all those “special” days when my children had to dress up in fancy dress or a specified colour of clothing. Delightful! It was usually a nightmare, in fact, because I ended up rushing around trying to find the most inexpensive T-shirts and shorts so they wouldn’t feel left out.

I agree, sometimes there really is a special occasion and then you don’t mind splashing out. But these days there always seem to be those “special” occasions.

What parent can refuse not to send his or her child dressed according to a theme? Imagine how the little one will feel if he or she is the only one not in the dress code! It creates terrible pressure and starts so early on in their lives at nursery school or crèche.

I’m not sure what the answer is but maybe for Valentine’s Day both girls and boys should wear whatever they normally would but in addition, the girls could wear a red ribbon or hair slide in their hair, and the boys could have a red ribbon attached to their top.

Any suggestions? I’d love to hear your views. Email me: juliem@caxton.co.za
