Criminals target rates office

They took computers valued at R76 630 and R20 350 in cash.

WHILE most residents of Eden Park were sleeping, six armed robbers surprised the security guards at the EMM Rates Office at 1.30am on November 8.

It is alleged that three security guards were sitting in the guardroom when suddenly the door was kicked open and six robbers entered with one pointing a firearm, instructing the guards to show them where the panic button was.

The three guards were tied up with shoelaces and taken to the back of the building. The robbers cut a hole in the roof to enter the offices.

It is further reported that the robbers allegedly used a metal grinder to break a wall, open all drawers and the safe. They took computers valued at R76 630 and R20 350 in cash.

Capt Vusi Mhlophe confirmed that a case of business robbery has been opened at the police station and the police are investigating.

“These were brave and desperate criminals who meant business with their grinder. The rates office is just about 300m from the police station,” said Mhlophe.
