Elderly woman collapses and dies at Meyersdal Mall Spar

"The body was lying there for hours before she was taken away and some of the family members had to sit there with her the whole time"

AN elderly woman (72) has died after collapsing in the Spar at Meyersdal Mall on September 18.

“The lady just collapsed suddenly and I rushed over to her to help as I am qualified in first aid,” one of Spar’s manager’s, Mark Georgio, told the Record.

“She said she had experienced indigestion yesterday (September 17) and she was gasping for breath as she talked to me. I did not want to do CPR as any obstruction may then have been pushed to create a further blockage. The ambulance was here very quickly and we tried to save her but she did not respond to our efforts,” added Georgio.

The incident occurred just after 12noon and according to Lindi Moloyi, Brackendowns police spokesperson, the police arrived at the scene at 2.45pm.

“The body was lying there for hours before she was taken away at 6.45pm and some of the family members had to sit there with her the whole time,” said Georgio.

“Unfortunately, the police have no power over when a body is removed as we have to wait for the government mortuary to come and there is usually only one vehicle for a large area and then usually also just a small woman who needs help to move the body,” said Moloyi.
