Bruna Haipel takes it upon herself

"I asked every possible department in the Metro to please cut down, collect and remove these cables, but I was blatantly ignored"

A Ward Councillor in Alberton – alderman Bruna Haipel – recently fixed a problem that the EMM did not seem up to.

For a long time, unsightly broken cables from electricity poles have been hanging down all along Michelle Avenue and several other parts of Alberton.

“Upon investigating, I discovered these cables are fibre optic cables put up many years ago and are no longer in use. The broken cables lying on the ground were an unsightly nuisance. No one was prepared to touch them as many residents thought they were dangerous electricity cables,” says Haipel.

UP WE GO: Alderman Bruna Haipel goes up the ladder with Councillor Tiaan Kotzé lending a hand.

“I politely asked every possible department in the Metro to cut down, collect and remove these cables, but I was blatantly ignored. I then decided to take the bull by the horns and do it myself,” adds Haipel.

On August 19, with the help of councillors Marina Van Wyk, Tiaan Kotzé and some other helpers, Bruna set to work to get rid of these eye-sores.

A big load of cables was taken to the dump, with the assistance of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department.

“Needless to say, there are many more areas with these unsightly cables hanging from light poles and cannot be reached with a mere step ladder,” said Haipel.

RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for comment, but they have not responded as yet.
