Cycle challenge raises money for CANSA

More than 5 000 cyclists participated in the 20th edition of the Bestmed CANSA Cycle Challenge at Sun City.

THE 20th edition of the Bestmed CANSA Cycle Challenge was held over the weekend of August 19 and 20 at Sun City.

More than 5 000 cyclists took to the road to support this worthy cause and over R3.6-million was raised for CANSA through the MTB and road races.

Race organisers had over 1 000 entrants for the MTB categories, but due to the unfortunate protests on the N4 only 460 cyclists started out on the morning of August 19.

The road cycle Elite event attracted over 4 000 cyclists on August 20.

MTB participants traversed large sections Sun City, including a palm plantation and the renowned Gary Player and Lost City golf courses. They also rode through the neighbouring Letsatsing Game Reserve.

Both the 25km and Elite 50km followed the same route, but the 50km MTB riders had to do the circuit twice.

Henry Uys won the MTB Elite race over 50km, which was held on August 19. He beat Alex Pavlov to the first place on the podium.

Kristin Louw won the women’s race in 2:11:42.

The road race was held over two distances, the Elite 103km and the 70km races.

Nolan Hoffman outsprinted Clint Hendricks to win in a fast time of 2:23;21 over the 103km.

Carla Oberholzer won the women’s race in a time of 2:47:21 to beat Cherise Willeit.
