Father of two shot at South Crest shop

Luckily, he is responsive and his condition is not life-threatening, although his jaw has suffered serious damage.

ON the evening of Thursday, July 13, a man was shot during the robbery of an informal convenience shop on the corner of Jan Meyer and Louw Streets, South Crest.

The victim, Ian Nieuwoudt (36), has been admitted to the Netcare Union Hospital and is still in ICU.

According to his wife, Karin, Ian was on his way to the convenience shop to buy bread and milk for his family, when – without his knowledge – five armed men followed him, with the intention of robbing the shop.

A cashier in the shop, who did not want to be named, told the RECORD that the robbers got away with about R7 000 in cash and a stash of cigarettes.

“They commanded everyone to lie down on the floor and not move. The owner of the shop looked up from the floor to see a quarrel between Ian and the robbers, after which a shot went off. The robbers then fled the scene. The incident took place at around 7pm.

“Ian was shot through his jaw and the bullet exited through the back of his neck. Two people with the names of Daleen and Stefanus saw what happened and quickly took Ian to the Union Hospital, along with Jaco Grobbelaar and Andy (surname unknown) from SOG Security.

“Ian is now recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of the Union Hospital. Luckily he is responsive and his condition is not life-threatening, although he has suffered serious damage to his jaw.”

Ian and Karin have two daughters. “We are very rattled, but we’re coping. Luckily we have ample support from our close family and friends,” says Karin.

“I want to thanks SOG for their amazing, quick response when the incident happened. I also want to thank Daleen, Stefanus, Jaco and Andy for helping my husband and taking him to the hospital. It means the world to us. And all praise to God for His saving grace and keeping Ian safe,” Karin said.
