Albemarle residents find homeless woman tied up, murdered

SAPS ask public to clean up blood.

AN elderly homeless woman was found tied up against a pole and lying in a pool of blood on a pavement in Onyx Street, Albemarle, on June 10.

Residents who live nearby said they heard screams at about 3am that day.

The body was discovered by passers-by at around 7am and the police were notified.

Bystanders said they were angered by the fact that the Germiston SAPS did not cordon the area off.

One resident, who wants to remain anonymous, said the police asked members of the public to clean up the dead woman’s blood and claims a worker from a nearby shopping centre sprayed the blood off the pavement with water.

Another resident said the victim was never any bother to the community. “Her stuff was always packed up in the morning and she cleaned the street,” he said.

According to Lourens Smit, from South Africa Search and Rescue, they took her belongings to the Germiston SAPS as the police didn’t take these from the crime scene. “If you go to the spot now the blood still marks the pavement as it wasn’t cleaned up properly,” he said.
