Mass ride – mass fun

Anyone is welcome to join and all that is required is a bicycle.

FRIDAY evening, March 3, saw dozens of cycling enthusiasts gathered at New Redruth Village for their monthly Alberton Mass Ride. It united young and old while paying tribute to the international Mass Ride event.

Cyclists jazzed up their bikes with colourful lights and big speakers, and some even drew attention with their funky, colourful helmets. While waiting for 7.30pm, they joked around and showed off various cycling tricks to each other. It made for a really enjoyable event – more than just cycling.

Arno van Eeden started this event with two of his friends in Alberton last year in December. It takes place every first Friday evening of the month. The cyclists meet at New Redruth Village, hit the road together at 7.30pm, and cycle around town until they reach the Alberton Rugby Club. This is when they socialise and have fun before travelling back to the starting point.

Anyone is welcome to join and all that is required is a bicycle. This event has grown massively in popularity since December.

“When it first started, there were maybe ten or twenty of us,” says Arno. “In December, though, there were hundreds of people.” Arno adds that, if it weren’t for the rain on Friday evening, there would probably have been many more people, too.
