New gymnastic wonder on the rise

Gymnasts who qualify are the highest scoring gymnast at nationals.

THIS nine-year-old gymnastic wonder did Alberton proud during a competition in Zimbabwe in December 2016.

Jade Warmbach qualified for the Region 5 Competition. Gymnasts who qualify are the highest-scoring gymnast at nationals. There are only four girls chosen in each level for the squad, with the fifth gymnast being the reserve.

As a youngster, Jade did exceptionally well, receiving first place on beam and tying first place on floor. She received a fourth all-round place for the Pre-Junior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition.

Cecile Prinsloo, owner of Alberton Gymnastics Club, was chosen as coach to the South African team in Zimbabwe. She has many years’ experience and is also coach to Jade. Prinsloo told the RECORD that the number of medals the club receives annually is astonishing.

Kim Veldman, a former elite gymnast at Alberton Gymnastics Club, now coaches at the club. Kim was chosen as one of the judges to represent South Africa at the Region 5 Competition in Zimbabwe.

Countries that participated in the event were South Africa, Namibia and hosts Zimbabwe, competing in the gymnastics disciplines of Artistic Men (MAG), Artistic Women (WAG), Rhythmic (RG), Trampoline (TRA) and Aerobic (AER). Team South Africa was the largest in attendance, comprising 83 members.

The purpose of the Region 5 Competition is to prepare up-and-coming talented youth for international competition. The second goal is to promote and develop the sport in the southern African region.

The hosting of this event is on a rotational basis between member countries, with the previous year’s edition being held in South Africa.
