Women ready to march against drug abuse

"We do arrest the drug lords, but what takes place in the courts is out of our hands" - Capt Vusi Mhlophe.

THE abuse of drugs such as nyaope and dagga has been singled out as a major contribution to the ever escalating crime in Eden Park and surrounding areas.

A group of concerned woman told the RECORD that the dealers who are selling drugs to youngsters and school learners are destroying the youth and that they form an underlying factor in issues related to domestic violence, rape, robbery, murder and the daily occurrence of house break-ins in the area.

“We gathered here to strategise a march against the drug dealers and drug addicts. Many of the drug dealers were seen on WhatsApp and most of them are known in the area, but we see no arrests being made.

”They drive around in their fancy cars making money, while our children’s lives are being destroyed,” said a woman who asked not to be named.

She stressed the point that they want the SAPS to do something about the shameless drug dealers.

“Our sons are turning into burglars who steal to get money for drugs; they start in their own homes and then move on to neighbours’ homes. While drugs are being sold, this practice will never stop,” she said.

“With almost one in three homes in Eden Park being affected by drugs and substance abuse, narcotics have become one of the main causes of serious and violent crimes and families are not safe in their own homes,” the group told the RECORD.

“We are not safe living under the same roofs, with the addicts stealing and assaulting their relatives to maintain their addictions.”

Capt Vusi Mhlophe said the police would support the march 100 per cent.

“We, the police, want to declare war on drugs and the drug lords. There will be no safe haven for drug lords in Eden Park,” he added.

”We do arrest the drug lords, but what takes place in the courts is out of our hands.”
