Patience is needed when adopting a pet

With love and patience he has blossomed into a wonderful, playful chap

It is with much interest that I read this article, “Patience is needed when adopting a pet”, in the Alberton RECORD last week.

Pets are an important part of our social environment and provide us with love, loyalty and passion. They bring much joy if we will only nurture their personalities to allow them to do so. But by the same token we need to be patient and persevere; one or two weeks does not qualify as having given it your best shot. Further the SPCA spays or neuters males/females prior to collection which is also stressful.

People who are thinking of adopting a pet should be 100 per cent sure that this is the route they would like to take as it is already traumatic for an animal to be constantly housed in a kennel and even more distressing for them to be adopted and returned. Pets are not items which can be bought and returned -they are a lifelong investment.

Just consider for a moment – would you adopt a child and then a week later return the same child? I think not. So then why do we treat our animals with such disdain and cruelty? People may be offended by this but that’s just the point of how important it is to reflect on our choices.

The SPCA is faced with extreme challenges on a daily basis – lack of kennel space, food and other items – but still manages to maintain the pets in their care, with more arriving every day.

Four months ago we adopted a dog from the SPCA. Initially he was scared and very malnourished but with a lot of love, care and patience he has blossomed into a wonderful, playful chap. Each pet has their own personality and if given enough time to adapt will bring much joy to both adults and children alike.

It saddens me to see how animals are abused, abandoned and sold, which is a reflection of what our society has become – callous and selfish.

What you sow is what you reap!
