Alberton High shines in Golden Lions rugby

Alberton High showed off their muscles on the rugby field this season.

ALBERTON High flexed their muscles on the rugby field this season.

The school’s u.15 team had a brilliant rugby season, doing extremely well in the PUK Super 16 series, as well as the Golden Lions middle schools league, beating most of the teams convincingly.

What makes their performance special is the fact that the boys started playing rugby only in high school.

Through hard work and dedication, they managed to win the playoffs and took on Hoërskool Gouddrif in the Golden Lions middle schools finals, on Saturday, July 23, when they were also victorious.

Sadly, they lost their last match on Saturday, July 30, but remain in the Beeld Trophy tournament. The team is coached by Flip Cowley and Morné Engelbrecht.

The Alberton High Schools u.14 rugby squad also performed well, in spite of many players not having played rugby before.

Having ended ninth in the PUK Super 16 series in their age group, they have, to date, remained unbeaten in the Golden Lions league for middle schools, qualifying for the final playoffs in the league, as well as for the Beeld Trophy.

They faced Hoërskool President in the final, having beaten Alan Glen 31-19 in the semi-final, and were again victorious, with a score of 26-7. The team is coached by Johan Venter and Willem Wright.
