Broken Wings helps with water

Broken Wings, a non-profit organisation (NPO) from Alberton, helps out farmers, even if it is in financial trouble.

BROKEN Wings, a non-profit organisation from Alberton, helps out farmers, even if it is in dire financial trouble.

The organisation has been working with civil rights organisation AfriForum, to help the community, and one of these initiatives is to collect and house water for the farmers of Kroonstad, who are currently suffering a massive water shortage.

Broken Wings cares for adolescents and adults with mental and physical challenges, the only place of it’s kind in Alberton, and also caters for people from Tokoza, Eden Park, Palmridge and the greater Alberton areas, offering a day-care service and two meals a day, from Monday to Friday.

“We look after 35 people at the moment, and we pick them up from their homes and drop them back off again,” says Sheryl Swanepoel, who does the organisation’s marketing.

According to Sheryl, the organisation requires around R40 000 per month to run the service and, although they charge a small stipend for their services, they do not turn anyone away; if they cannot pay, they don’t, putting a strain on the facility.

“We are in serious trouble financially; we receive no help from the government, our premises is falling apart, and we rely on donations from the community, individuals and businesses alike,” says Sheryl.

Broken Wings can also be assisted by other means, such as offering services in terms of maintenance and repairs to the house, and donating clothing, food, cleaning materials, etc.

Water can be brought to the organisation’s premises, to assist the people of Kroonstad, as can any donations, to assist them in the excellent work they do.
