SAPS spreads awareness

The Police are handing out safety tips about hijackings, domestic violence, substance abuse, theft of motor vehicle, business robbery, house robbery, children and adults rights and sexual offences.

A RELAXED community is a vulnerable community.

According to Alberton SAPS spokesperson Sgt Phora Nkuna, the police have noticed that people tend not to be vigilant and that makes them easy targets.

“The police are handing out safety tips about hijackings, domestic violence, substance abuse, theft of motor vehicle, business robbery, house robbery, children’s and adults’ rights and sexual offences,” he said.

”This was done because we have noticed that the community is relaxed and this makes them vulnerable to crime.”

Nkuna explained that several cases have been reported where property was stolen from houses while people are present and sleeping, without them hearing anything.

“People need to make sure the doors are locked and windows closed when they go to sleep,” he said. ‘

”Windows need to be secured with burglar proofing and all other security features need to be activated, even if you are still waiting for others to arrive home later.”

Car owners are reminded that they need to park their cars inside the yard at all times and to keep the gates closed.

Old model cars need improvements to their security features. Gear locks and steering locks and alarms must be installed and all security features need to be activated when a person leaves the car, even for only a short time.

Nkuna further urged the community to assist the SAPS with information to help fight crime.

“There are crimes which are committed and firearms are used; we need information about those firearms, where they come from, how they are stored or concealed, who has illegal firearms and so on. The community is our eyes and ears out there,” he said.

Members of the community may also be rewarded for giving positive information that leads to arrests if they are registered informers.

To become a registered informer enquire at the police station.

“We need your help to win this battle. Together we can do more in fighting crime,” Nkuna said.
