EMPD launches Bumper to Bumper programme

ON Friday, April 15, 40 drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol were apprehended in Alberton, Dawn Park, Vosloorus, Katlehong and Tokoza.

ON Friday, April 15, 40 drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol were apprehended in Alberton, Dawn Park, Vosloorus, Katlehong and Tokoza.

Between 14:00 and 22:00, several EMPD precincts’ members and specialised services units combined and a crackdown on drinking and driving was launched, which resulted in roadside checks being conducted along Masakhane, Sontonga, Thutong, Kunene, Heidleberg (R103) and Barry Marais roads, targeting motorists behaving irresponsibly and driving erratically.

Over and above the arrested drivers, a 32-year-old male suspect with 19 ziplocks of nyaope was locked up as well as three males suspected of possible robbery at Tokoza Shoprite.

Twenty drivers nabbed on Masakhane, Khotso, Sontonga and Thutong roads, aged between 22 and 40, were expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 18. Sixteen drivers apprehended on Barry Marais, Hassink, Pelser, R103, and MC Botha roads, aged between 16 and 29, were expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 18. Four more, aged between 29 and 35, were put under arrest on Old Vereeniging and Heidelberg roads and were expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 18.

“Bumper to Bumper operations will continue to give no space to any form of criminality and will ensure no crime committed doesn’t go unpunished,” said Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police.
