On Thursday, May 5, two Alberton residents will be celebrating 60 years of marriage

Hendrik (better known as Hendry) and Maureen van der Schyff spoke to the RECORD about being married for so many years.

Hendry, who turned 82 on April 11, is an accomplished French-horn player and used to be a Sergeant Major in the Moths regiment during the Border War. He worked as a contract manager (after a four-year apprenticeship) for most of his working career and, after his retirement, worked at a church as a maintenance manager.

Maureen was a chief clerk for Woolworths as well as a salary controller for Greyhound.

After retirement, the couple became avid bowls players, but are unable to play anymore as they both have knee problems.

“We were in the same group of friends and were actually both in other relationships before we got together,” recalls Maureen.

The couple have four children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with a fifth one on the way.

“We plan to celebrate our anniversary with some family at a Portuguese restaurant we like,” said Maureen.
