Eden Park Secondary’s pass rate drops

ONLY a handful of matriculants arrived at the Eden Park Secondary School on Wednesday, January 6, to collect their certificates. With modern technology, many learners knew their results beforehand and did not come to school as has been the custom in previous years.

The matric class of 2015 did not do very well in the June and September examinations.

The pass rate for the class of 2015, however, stands at 75,5 per cent compared to 91,2 per cent for 2014. The pass rate is 15,7 per cent lower than the previous year but five per cent higher than the national pass rate of 70,4 per cent.

“Some of you have made it while some did not. To those who did not, I say don’t give up. Don’t stop and give up your dream and please don’t make a u-turn and despair because that is when you become a loser,” said Pastor Paul Jacobs as he gave guidelines and motivation to the few matriculants who attended the ceremony.

The principal, E.M. Naude, had mixed feelings when she spoke to the RECORD. “I feel happy and sad simultaneously. I am happy because the teacher and the learners worked hard to improve the bad results of June and September. On one hand I am sad that we could not match the 2014 pass rate, but I promise that this year will be different and a surprise is waiting,” she said.
