Jacob’s Well Christmas breakfast

The Jacob’s Well breakfast on December 3 was a joyous occasion, attended by a large number of Jacob’s Well members, as well as people who have benefited from their efforts.

Walking in to the Bracken Square Spur, you were greeted by the friendly Estelle Bickerton, the Jacob’s Well secretary.

Estelle excitedly shared the organisation’s accomplishments since its inception and what they have planned for the coming year.

Their accomplishments thus far include a third vegetable tunnel that is 50ft long and includes many varieties of vegetables which they have used, along with their other two tunnels, to feed over 180 families in the community; a CV writing and interview skills workshop to help people find employment; Blessing Blanket workshops which give blankets as gifts and include a blessing; a sewing workshop that teaches people to sew, make clothing and handbags and regular outreach initiatives to the underprivileged.

These initiatives will continue next year, along with other planned workshops to help develop entrepreneurs and show them how to formulate business plans; a domestic training course which helps domestic workers (or potential ones) to learn how to do many of the household jobs correctly and a computer literacy course.

Beginner sewing classes will commence on Tuesday, January 19, and advanced classes on Thursday, January 21, from 09:00-12:00 and will cost R70 per month. Mixed classes will start on Saturday, January 23, at a cost of R100 per month.

For any queries, or if there are any skilled people who have ideas on other possible classes they would be willing to offer, residents or businesses who would like to donate their time or financial assistance, please contact Estelle on 011 869 3322 (office hours) or 082 343 7281.
