Making a pink difference one drive at a time

The annual PinkDrive Pink Tie Dinner was held at Emperors Palace.

Emperors Palace recently hosted the annual PinkDrive Pink Tie Dinner to raise awareness and to assist women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Among the attendees for the Mardi Bra-themed event were radio and television presenter, Cindy van Wyk, Mrs Globe, Riana Mooi, minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga, PJ Powers and Noelene Kotschan, the CEO and founder of PinkDrive.

PinkDrive, a breast cancer community carer and a public benefit organisation (PBO), is known for operating the country’s first mobile PinkDrive mammography unit and educational unit. These units have conducted more than 8 600 mammograms, over 122 000 clinical breast examinations and educated more than 179 000 women on breast health since its inception in August 2009.

Cindy specifically spoke about her involvement with PinkDrive in 2009 when she raised over R20 000 for the initiative by cycling from Windhoek to Cape Town. Little did she know, she said, that five years later she would be diagnosed with breast cancer and would have to undergo a double mastectomy.

A new feature at this year’s event was the presentation of the Pink Diamond Floating Trophy, awarded to individuals who have actively worked with PinkDrive.

Carel Nolte from Morningside and the deputy minister of social development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu were awarded the floating trophy.

Carel was recognized after making history this year with his Comrades Race for Charity campaign, where he single handedly raised over R160 000 for PinkDrive, making him the highest contributing individual on the charity platform.

Hendrietta, also known as PinkDrive’s own Iron Lady, was recognized as she always goes the extra mile.
