Former primary school principal dies in robbery

It’s believed than nine men, driving a two-tone red and black golf GTI were involved in the robbery at Tops Liquor Store where Stevens was killed.

KIBLER PARK – The former principal of Danie Theron Primary School, Johan Stevens, was shot dead during an armed robbery at Tops Liquor Store, in Kibler Park, in the late afternoon of Thursday, July 9.

Stevens was also a resident of Kibler Park.

It’s believed than nine men, driving a two-tone red and black golf GTI were involved in the robbery at Tops Liquor Store where Stevens was killed.

Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said police in Mondeor have launched a manhunt for about nine robbers. It is alleged that the group, some of whom were armed, stormed into the liquor outlet.

“They pushed the security guard inside and proceeded to rob the establishment, stealing an undisclosed amount of cash, liquor and cigarettes,” Mongale explained.

”As they fled the scene, they met with a 65-year-old man who they wanted to rob of his wallet. He resisted and the robbers shot him before fleeing the scene in a red Golf GTI and a white Ford Ranger.”

They raced along Swartkoppies Road, towards Alberton, and opened fire on a passing D&D Tactical vehicle, driven by a technician on his way home.

It is believed that the fleeing robbers thought he was an armed reaction officer. The D&D vehicle took bullets but, fortunately, the technician was unharmed.

Stevens leaves his wife, Marianne, his two daughters and grandchildren.
