EMM Career Expo held in Alberton

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality hosted a two-day Career Expo to equip graduates with skills and opportunities to gain employment.

ALBERTON – The Ekurhuleni Career Expo was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9 and 10, at the Alberton Civic Centre.

An interactive Internship Conference was also held at the Birchwood Hotel Conference Centre in Boksburg on the second day of the expo.

During the expo over 220 interns who have been placed in various departments within the city, and private companies that the municipality has partnered with, had the opportunity to interact with their mentors and companies.

On Wednesday, the MMC for Economic Development, Clr Thumbu Mahlangu, opened the floor for an interactive discussion and feedback session between municipal officials, mentors and interns to hear what the young people’s concerns and challenges are.

One of the issues raised by interns was that organisations do not absorb them and make them full-time employees once their internship ends.

“The aim of the internship programme is to create a conducive environment for young people to be exposed to the world of work by giving them skills they need to be employable,” said the MMC in response to the concerns raised.

He further stated that he will take their comments up with the companies and encourage them to absorb deserving young people when there are available vacancies.

After the interactive session representatives from companies took the opportunity to present their expectations from young professionals and outlined what their internship programmes entail.

Unemployed graduates were given the opportunity to be placed on a database, used by the municipality to place graduates into work readiness programmes and other skills development initiatives.

Career advisory services and a computer lab with internet connection were provided for free at the event.

Job creation, business opportunities in Ekurhuleni, improving and up-scaling initiatives for youth employment and enhancing job creation were among the topics speakers addressed at the Job Summit.
