Anglers host clean-up campaign

ALBERTON – Regular visitors to the Jackson Dam may notice that it is often frequented by amateur and professional fishing enthusiasts. On Saturday, May 23, the dam was visited by a group of ardent anglers who were on a mission to clear the dam of debris and litter.
The group, led by Robin Norton, is attempting to create a fishing club of their own, founded on principles of sustainability and safety for fishing. All the members use the catch and release method of fishing and use specialised equipment to ensure that the fish are healthy after being caught and photographed.
During the clean-up campaign, the group was joined by councillor Estelle Visser and DA representatives. Together they removed fishing lines, old hooks and other litter from the water and the reeds.
“These fish are like our children so we want to take care of them,” said Gys Britz Jnr a fishing club member.
