March for service delivery

Residents of Eden Park and surrounding areas, including Greenfields had decided that enough is enough and took to the streets on Wednesday, February 18 in a march for better service delivery.

The marchers, consisting of members from different political parties like EFF, ANC, UDM and DA, marched from Extention 1 to the Rates Office shouting: “Away with Councillor Zide and his cabinet! We want service delivery!”

SANCO, ward committee and various political party members handed over their petition to the MMC of Sports Zeni Tshongweni, who promised to respond within 14 days. But the leaders, under the leadership of Greenfields community leader Michael Mavuso, demanded that Ward Councillor Gladstone Zide be suspended for the 14 days, while waiting for the response from the MMC’s office.

Marching residents were mainly complaining about the Ward 53 local councillor, who they claimed was doing nothing for them except doing favours for his group of followers who formed his ‘cabinet’.

They also complained that many residents are still without houses, many houses without electricity, streets in bad conditions and jobs given to selected people.

The RECORD spoke to Councillor Zide, who said: “Most of the complaints from the residents have been discussed. The chief whip, Robert Mashigo, responded to the complaints in 2013 at the Greenfields Community Hall and explained a way forward in the area.

“Together with the ward committee we are busy with construction of roads in Greenfields, employing residents at the new project near Thinasonke, where houses will be build. Contractors have been appointed to build 233 houses in phase one Eden Park, which will give employment to residents.

“We have created employment for 105 community members, who are employed as security at the new houses in Eden West. With the eviction issue, the story is not true that I had signed the eviction papers. This issue is a court matter and could not have been signed by me,” he concluded.
