The first Ekurhuleni Council meeting has come with good news for Alberton motorists. During the Executive Mayor’s opening address, Cllr. Mondli Gungubele announced a partnership between Bidvest Velocity and the City to take on the plague of potholes on Ekurhuleni’s roads. Bidvest, as part of its corporate social investment plan, has pledged to assist the city at no cost to the Metro.

While the partnership has been announced as an augmentation to the city’s own maintenance plan, it may be the only relief effort residents will see. The Roads and Stormwater Department received a crushing review from the DA for their work during the previous financial year, due to extreme underspending and perceived lack of leadership in management. None of the funds allocated to the Roads and Stormwater Department has been spent this quarter.

The Mayor presented a positive outlook to the situation, saying: “As we speak right now, our Roads and Stormwater Department is working on a plan that will ensure that the gap presently plugged by Bidvest in dealing with potholes, is permanently closed going forward to avoid the present status quo.”
