Six cars crash on Swartkoppies Road

At 08:00 on July 28, six vehicles were involved in a pile-up just after the Vermooten Street turn-off leading into Swartkoppies Road.

BRACKENHURST – A 47-year-old male explained that his son was travelling in a blue Golf had been involved in an accident during the morning prior to the six-car pile-up at around 07:00, which was to be towed away.

At around 07:50, the first two vehicles were stationery, a white Nissan NP 200 driven by Owen Oswin, who saw in his rear view mirror that a Mercedes C200 Kompressor behind him, driven by Jayce Chetty, was also stationery at the time.

Sherene Clarkpowell, driving a Polo Vivo, explained that she noticed the accident of the blue Golf on the left of the road and when she looked back again she saw the Mercedes and attempted to stop, but she could not stop in time and hit the vehicle. This was followed by a Toyota Corolla 2000 and a Ford Ikon that collided shortly afterwards, and the Volvo being the last vehicle to crash into the Ford.

Clarissa Lensley, driver of the Volvo, drove slowly. She looked at the road, noticed the pile-up and can’t remember what happened next.

Fareed Kock, who drove the Toyota, explained that his wife sustained injuries and was transported to the Union hospital by paramedics. Jayce Chetty, who drove the Mercedes, suffered whiplash.

Ursula Taljaard, who drove the Ford Ikon, said: ”If there is an accident on the side of the road, people should pay attention to what is happening in front of them and not be distracted by other things. “
