Numsa strike: dog set alight in Booysens
The strike continues and it is on its fourth day, workers are demanding 12 per cent increase.
BOOYSENS – According to The Star newspapers striking members of National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) caused havoc on the third day of their nationwide strike on Thursday July 3.
About 150 protesters clad in NUMSA red vandalised several factories in the Booysens area of Johannesburg, as well as vehicles parked around them.
They were armed with knobkierries, tree branches, sticks and hammers.
The protesters tried to set alight a building, but the owners quickly put out the fire. However, a dog was engulfed by the flames and burnt to death.
Similar incidents took place in Benoni and Germiston.
Numsa denied the accusations of intimidation and vandalism in a statement.
“They are just part of a cheap ploy by the employers to undermine the integrity of our struggle for a living wage and improved conditions of employment,” spokesman Castro Ngobese said.
Bizarrely, the Booysens, Benoni and Germiston police stations said no reports of any criminal activity had been made to them.
