Alberton CBD bus terminus to be demolished in July

After a long period of time of sending queries for comment to the City of Ekurhuleni departments, the city vowed to demolish the Alberton CBD bus terminus by no later than July.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) finally responded to the Alberton Record’s queries about the long-awaited demolition of the Alberton CBD bus terminus.

On June 12, CoE spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini said that the terminus is pencilled down (relevant department and officials have signed forms) for demolition next month, July.

“We have received the demolition permit already and we will shortly be advertising a notice of the demolition,” said Zweli.

Dlamini previously indicated that the building was going to be demolished last year by no later than July, however, later reported that internal processes delayed the demolition of the CBD bus terminus and that served as a principal reason why the building was not flattened.

Alberton residents are concerned about the terminus as it is allegedly housing individuals who are potentially harmful to their safety and the place had become an eyesore.

On June 3 of last year, the former mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Tania Campbell, the former MMC of Transport Planning, Alco Ngobese, and other officials paid a visit to the long-abandoned bus depot in Alberton.

The visit was part of Campbell’s back-to-basics strategy to service delivery. The site visit also focused on monitoring the city’s infrastructure.

The building was initially planned to house a drive-through licencing office to reduce the workload of the Alrode Licencing Department.
