Ekurhuleni gives clarity on refuse removals

The intention of introducing the fixed calendar is to reduce illegal dumping.

ALBERTON – Since the newly scheduled calendar of ‘dustbin day’, as we know it, EMM (Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality) has explained salaries, public holidays and teething problems.

“The intention of introducing the fixed calendar is to reduce illegal dumping that takes place when waste is not collected during public holidays. The cost of collection of illegal dumping is far higher than that of the overtime that would be incurred.”

The answers were provided after residents wanted to know how EMM was planning on paying the employees over public holidays. Although the workers will be paid double their salaries for public holidays, EMM says that it costs more to remove illegal dumping.

When EMM was asked what they plan on doing if the workers do not pitch, they said, “Lengthy consultations have been had with organised labour in this regard and we do not anticipate any service delivery issues regarding absenteeism.

“We will not be working Saturdays to cover any backlogs related to public holidays.”

  1. So we have a fixed day, but the refuse is not removed on that day, but on the public holiday. Surely that costs more?

  2. Its a joke. Pikitup ‘s system of recycling lasted the first week. ! Come and look at The Hill!! Especially 1st avenue! Geranium! Its a dump! I sympathise with the municipality – but also question their efficiency!
