Open letter to the Mayor

Councillor Haipel writes to the Mayor as she points out areas of concern.

I sat in Council for a whole day listening to your State of the City Address, where with great eloquence you commended past achievements of this Metro and grand future plans claiming that all is rosy in this Metro.

However, I wish to point out that there are a great many service delivery issues that leave a great deal to be desired.

As Ward Councillor, I am constantly being confronted by unhappy ratepayers who question why they are paying rates for no service.

On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday there were power outages in Alberton.

Mr Mayor, I am not now questioning the facts of all these outages, which I had to explain to hundreds of irate residents, but what I am questioning very seriously, is the fact that in this ā€œDigital Ageā€, and despite all the millions of rands of ratepayer money spent by this Metro for this project, the Emergency Control Centre is still non-functional .

The standard reply to phone calls to 080543000 is: “This number is not contactableā€, with the result that I and other councillors became the official call centre.

I would like to put on record that the councillors are sick and tired of having to do the job of the call centre, and it is unacceptable that the ratepayers and the councillors have to bear the brunt of the Metroā€™s inefficiency.
