Two of the three adult men were found lying motionless and one was under the bakkie.

Two people died and one was critically injured when four vehicles crashed on the N12 freeway northbound near Elands interchange.

The accident happened at about 11 am on May 14.

The City of Ekurhuleni Emergency (CoE) services rescue team and paramedics received the call at 11.18 am and swiftly responded to the scene for intervention. When CoE arrived, they found two bakkies and two trucks to have been involved in the crash.

The wrecks were scattered across the entire freeway, bringing the traffic to a complete standstill. Debris and fuel spillage were covering the bigger part of the road surface. Two of the three adult men were found lying motionless and one was under the bakkie.

The third patient was still trapped inside one of the bakkies, which was on its side. Pre-hospital medical treatment was rendered and two were declared dead on the scene. The patient trapped was extricated from the wreck and was transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus. He sustained intense head and upper body injuries.

Both truck drivers escaped without obvious injuries. All four lanes were temporarily closed to traffic for the duration of the operation.

A rescue team and other stakeholders collectively rehabilitated the road surface before allowing traffic flow back on the N12 freeway. It is alleged that the two dead patients were from the bakkies and were busy towing each other in the middle of the road prior the crash.
