Armed robber dies in shoot-out at construction site in Ring Road

The other suspects managed to flee the scene.

A robber was shot dead by an on-duty security guard after he and three others attempted to rob the construction site in Ring Road on May 10 at about 7.30 pm.

According to Du Toit Lambrechts, CEO of the Special Operations Group (SOG), one of the security guards was conducting routine patrols on the site when he came across the four armed robbers.

A shoot-out ensued between the guard and the suspects and the guard managed to shoot one of the robbers in the face and chest before taking a bullet himself.

“The other guards on-site alerted us by pressing their panic buttons and the suspects fled the scene,” said Lambrechts.

On arrival, officers from SOG notified National Paramedical Services who attended and transported the security guard to the Union Hospital. The body of the robber was discovered while officers from SOG were searching the area for suspects.

“We suspect that the robbers fled in a white Volvo as the vehicle was driving around the site area around the time of the incident. “Normally in cases like this, criminals send a small group to apprehend the security guards before the rest of the gang enter the site with vehicles stealing plant and construction tools,” said Lambrechts.

Lambrechts said that the security guard was shot in his chest and punctured a lung. He is in a critical but stable condition in ICU.

Alberton SAPS is busy with further investigation.
