WATCH: Fire destroys 39 Alberton North informal structures

The fire left more than 130 people with nothing.

A FIRE occurred in the early hours of July 7 at the Alberton North informal settlement near the train station, destroying 39 informal structures.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and local authorities are busy with the investigation. The fire left more than 130 people with nothing. Community members already came together to hand out soup and bread and they also collected blankets for the victims, but they still need more donations.

“Thank you to everyone so far for their help and support. Thank you to Amcare for the preparations and to Jane from Smart Meals for her donations,” said volunteer Abie Lubbe. According to a community member, Jean Ingram, food and clothes are the biggest need. So far three drop-off points have been made available for donations: 10 Solomon Road, 42 Bergh Road, and 18A Sandwich Bay Road.
