Rand water has provided updates on the work being done on the B11 pipeline which is affecting areas in the south of Johannesburg.

According to Rand Water, the work on the pipeline commenced at 6am on June 24.

“This 12km pipeline is 2 500mm in diameter from where significant volumes of water need to be drained,” said media relations manager for Rand Water, Justice Mohale.

“The draining of water will allow technicians to safely commence with the required cutting and welding.”

According to him, the work is proceeding well and all the required resources are on site.

Phase two of the work started at 10pm and was estimated to take a further four hours.

“The remaining work activities for the duration of the shutdown consists primarily of welding, testing and the commissioning the new line,” said Mohale.

Today (June 25) at 8.30am, it was reported that work was progressing as scheduled.

Technical teams worked through the night and the Rand Water network was operational and stable and all reservoirs were meeting demand.

There were no reports from municipal customers of interruptions to the service due to the shutdown.

Rand Water’s ‘War Room’, established to oversee the shutdown, is continuously monitoring the network.

Rand Water requests consumers to continue using water sparingly.

Updates will follow as the work progresses.
