BREAKING NEWS: Police bust drug manufacturing plant in Brackenhurst

A female suspect has been apprehended and police are investigating another suspect believed to be involved in the operation.

Police unearthed a clandestine pharmaceuticals manufacturing facility on 2 Esserman Street in Brackenhurst on June 18.

Working in partnership the Hawks Organised Crime Unit and Johannesburg Flying Squad discovered the manufacturing plant in the back room of a suburban home. The discovery follows a tipoff to police by the public of a large number of boxes being delivered to the residence.

According to Hawks national spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulauzi the products being manufactured are mainly male enhancement products and weight loss products, but there are also other pharmaceuticals being made at the site.

He estimates the value of the illegal products to be over R3 million in worth but he estimates that this number might increase as investigations continue. “What is worrying is that you see these products on the shelves of well-known stores and you don’t know whether they come from here,” says Brigadier Mulauzi. “It is a serious health risk.”

A female suspect has been apprehended and police are investigating another suspect believed to be involved in the operation.

Keep an eye on next week’s paper for more information about the bust.
