UPDATE: District gives feedback on Glenview Primary School

Luthuli informed parents of the progress made since the decisions taken by the MEC.

MEC Panyaza Lesufi called a meeting with parents of Glenview Primary School on April 9 to give feedback regarding the decisions taken by him a week earlier.

Acting district director of education Busi Luthuli apologised on behalf of the MEC who was not present at the meeting due to an emergency at another institution that required his presence.

Luthuli provided feedback on the progress made by the district since the last meeting with parents.

Lesufi announced that the school governing body (SGB) of Glenview Primary would be disbanded and, according to Luthuli, letters were delivered to the SGB during the week that officially informed them that they are no longer part of the SGB.

Denise Potgieter, who is facing charges the district is yet to disclose, has been reporting to the district since April 4 and, according to Luthuli, had a disciplinary hearing.

The promised report cards have been sent out on April 5.

Principal of Glenview Tommie Stoltz will report to the district within the week to begin his three-month diversity and social cohesion course.

During the meeting, it was announced the principal of nearby Laerskool President Steyn, Pieter le Roux, will be taking over the responsibility of principal for Glenview for the three-month period.

Luthuli also said the catch-up plan that was to be put in place has started this term. According to Luthuli, a management plan has been set in motion regarding the governance of the school.

Limited information

Parents raised various concerns to Luthuli during the meeting. A chief concern is the limited amount of information shared with the parents regarding the actual reasons behind the disciplinary actions and the decisions taken by the MEC.

Luthuli explained they can’t explain more due to the matter being sub judice, to which the parents responded as an invalid reason for them to withhold the information.

Parents were also concerned about the tumult it would cause if Stoltz was to return after three months.

Other concerns parents raised include continuing fund-raising events rather than teaching time, the catch-up plan not proceeding as necessary and adding extra pressure on the children and the management of the school.

Luthuli informed the parents the decisions regarding the school were taken at a higher level, but the concerns of the parents have been noted and will be taken to the upper structures for feedback.
