Alleged drunk driver crashes into lamppost on Voortrekker Road

The driver hit a car, nearly hit a person and crashed into a lamppost.

AN alleged drunken driver crashed into a lamppost as he tried to flee from security officers in Voortrekker Road on March 29.

The driver was reportedly involved in protests march at the SARS office in Alberton.

According to an eyewitness, the driver hit a parked car when he tried to leave the protest scene. When the witness tried to stop him from leaving the scene, the driver came right at him, trying to run him over.

CPS security was notified on the incident and went searching for the vehicle.

The driver spotted a CPS patrol car, and realising what was up, tried to take off. He lost control of the vehicle and hit a lamppost.

DRUNK: The suspect was allegedly highly intoxicated when he tried to evade the law.

Sales director at CPS Security Tyron van der Merwe said the suspect was highly intoxicated. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the suspect was investigated by paramedics and found not to be seriously injured.

The EMPD arrested the man who was taken into custody.
